I have a win 98se which now needs multiple boots to crank up properly. Can anyone confirm it's possible to transfer the hard drive contents via USB to an external hard drive then transfer back to a new PC?

yes.

if usb1 i'd go on holiday while it is doing it.
if usb2 , it might do it a little faster.

why not take drive out of 'faulty' machine , add it to 'good' machine as a slave drive , and copy what you want quickly over ide channels

Faster than a speeding bullet this morning Gary! Thanks for the suggestion, I've no doubt I'll be back for further instructions if I go down the ide route. Thanks again.
