Another 'faulty hard drive' problem fixed

Writing about the Maxtor reminded me that I had a quite different problem withn a client's hard drive a couple of weeks ago.

In this case the drive was recognised, but Windows claimed that it needed formatting. No file structure could be seen. As (once again) the disk contained months of work (which had not been backed up) anything that would retrieve the data was worth trying. I found that the file structure was recognised in DOS so, by use of a WIN95 boot floppy which contained XCOPY32, I was able to transfer the data on to another drive.

For anybody using this method, don't forget the use the /s /e modifiers to include all folders at all levels.
