My cheapo (well "free" when I spent £1k plus on a projector) Philips BD player is compatible, so the blurb says, with both BD-R discs and BD-RE 2.0 discs.

Presumably there is a difference between BD-RE and BD-RE 2.0 discs but difficult to establish this when searching at Amazon.

Could somebody please explain if there IS a material difference and if so recommend 25gb and 50gb BD-RE 2.0s.

BD-RE 2 are the norm. It's not mentioned in specs but generally current Blu-ray rewritable discs on sale are either single layer, dual layer or 8cm camcorder size discs. Verbatim seem to be the safest option in terms of compatability.

I didn't realise there were two standards. Reading the small print on a Verbatim BD-RE I bought about eighteen months ago (?), it says "Format Ver 2.1".
