Bulletin Board Annoyances

Aaargh! Who decided to make usernames for the bulletin board case sensitive? I've just spent ten minutes faffing around trying to find out why the bulletin board wouldn't let me post, claiming that there was no user with my user name yet letting me view my profile from previous postings and then when I resubmitted my registration as 'unicorn' (all lower case) telling me that there was already someone registered with that name. Only after getting my user name emailed to me did I discover that I have to type it as 'Unicorn' rather than 'unicorn' when I post, even though I originally entered it as lower case.

I have to say I really dislike sites which force me to register precisely because it introduces all these kinds of new bugs... and it probably increases your legal liability if someone does post something defamatory or illegal (certainly it seems to in US law).

Virtually all systems today are case sensitive, I guess because the designers think that this increases the security.

If you go to "preferences" (top right, below
the "Post New Topic" icon, you can have your username and password stored on your PC and added automatically.

What all users of the board should do is click on the "faq" url that is also under the "Post New Topic" icon, because it gives you a lot of useful information about what this system can do.

For example, below is an extract from there about how to set up automatic UserName and Password entry.

Cookies

This bulletin board uses cookies to store the following information: the last time you logged in, your username and password, and your preferred "topic view", if you set it in preferences. These cookies are stored on your browser. No cookies are used to track your movement or perform any other function other than enhance your use of the bulletin board. If your browser does not support cookies, or you have not enabled cookies on your browser, many of these time-saving features will not work properly.

The problem is that the system is only case-sensitive in certain cases. It automatically converted the lower-case unicorn to mixed case when I registered, and when you try to register it treats both identically. It's only when I later have to log in that it requires me to type in a *different* user name to the one that I registered under. This is a really silly user interface design.

Yes, I know about cookies: they're an annoyance and I'd rather log in each time than have to go through the hassle of adding the cookie for this site to the cookie file on my PC.
