Attended a rehearsal last night. The Vicar wants me up in the pulpit! Usually, I find that the clergy don't want you on display too much, (I'm chuckling at your little cracks already ) so this is unique to me. I reckon it's gonna be a wee bit more nerve racking up there!

Funnily enough, I did a pulpit job last Saturday. Good views of proceedings, especially as it was on the bride's side and I could see her for once. Trouble was no room to open the tripod properly, so had to use one leg only. Worked reasonably well, but should have practised more first. Also, the leg/camera touched the stonework at times and made big audio clunk. Will isolate MK300 from cam next time. Lucky I had unmanned backup cam and sound. Take care and good luck. PF

There's one Church, which shall be nameless, where the 'very modern'(?), tree hugging, happy clappy vicar, insists the camera should be at the back, up in the gods, next to the organ grinder, even though there is no choir and a heap of room at the front, with a great view of both the service and the guests.
Thank the Lord for radio mics, but what a way to spoil the happy couples wedding day memories.
The view of the back of their heads was very moving.
I'd willingly stand on one leg for an hour in the pulpit to get those now essential service shots.

I filmed a wedding yesterday in St Mary's & St Bonifice Church in Cecil Street Plymouth. What a lovely Church and a lovely vicar. On the rehersal the bride & groom introduced the family to the vicar and then said "oh, that's David who's filming the wedding". His only words to me were "feel free". That was it, didn't care what I did, were I went. Don't meet many like that so was pleasantly suprise.

I have to say the Catholic Priest's have a far more liberal and welcoming outlook than C of E Vicars. You can put cams wherever (within reason) you wish in order to get your shots.
Some Vicars are still stuck in the victorian (it's my Church)era, where they demand all attention is fixed on them, forgetting It's somebody elses Wedding day.
Another day, another wedding to film.

How many times have you heard that "The vicar is for good, you won`t have any problems"!

We did one on May 1st in Exeter, Catholic Church. Went to the rehearsal & asked if I could get the Bride & Father processing down the ailse. "As long as you are gone by the time I arrive" was the reply! Roger Bannister couldn`t have moved any faster! & so it was a good job the boss was strategically placed at the side to cover the shot.

They also had a relative singing during the signing. I got some frontal shots whilst he was practising before the ceremony. Boss got side shots of him during the actual signing. In the edit we thought we could use both of those! Trouble was he sang at a different speed on both occasions. No probs, the first take was slowed to give lip synch on the second! Thank goodness for NLE`s

The strange thing is, after telling me he want's me up in the pulpit - couldn't be any more 'on view' - he demanded that our 2nd cam stay at the back of the church....loooong way a way, And "remain static at all times"!!

Whatever I agree to I stick to - I don't think that doing otherwise helps our cause in the long term.

'ok, you can go behind those flowers where no one can see you' (and that after 10 mins of negotiation)
THEN - as the first hymn was being sung he walked passed and SHOUTED 'Sit Down' at me.
I'm a nice sort of guy who just tries to get along with every one and knows full well the need to keep vicar happy, so believe me when I say I did nothing to wind this bloke up before hand.
Pulpit? I dreamed of a pulpit that day.

I feel it would take only one really good verbal bollocking in front of everyone, to show these Church bullies up for what they are . . arrogant, spoilt, self centred brats. I know 1 or 2 who seem to take delight in bawling out bridesmaids who put a foot wrong in church.... the same ones who insist on cash payments for their services ..... We can have the last laugh though. All video guys have the ability to run the clips that show everyone at their best.... and worst.

I have used the phrase ...

You are only passing through this church. I'll still be videoing weddings here when yoiu're long gone !

This has been used at the clergy and another pet hate of ours, new Hotel managers !!!
