Cheap SCSI cables?

Anyone know a source for SCSI cables at a tolerable price? I'm intending to attach a SCSI CD-writer to my DV300, and need an ultra-high-density 68-pin to some kind of 50-pin cable (not sure of the precise details yet). A quick search on the web implies that the cable is likely to cost 10-20% of the price of the CD-writer!

I buy my SCSI cables at computer fairs at very reasonable prices. If I remember the last 8-way 50-pin ribbon I bought cost about £8 and I have not yet had any failures or data loss. Try looking at http://www.computer-fairs.co.uk/ for a location. If you've got the time they're fun to attend and can become addictive!

Incidentally I believe 50-pin and 68-pin are different SCSI standards and may need more than an adapter cable (if such a thing exists) to interconnect the two.

Good luck

Homestead (.com or is it .uk?)

Recently changed their name and site, but the old one still has a link.

Nice people, nice prices, wide range of SCSI bits and pieces, and with lots of diagrams on the web site to make choosing easier.

Thanks for the pointer, I'll try to find the site!

BTW, although the 68-pin and 50-pin connectors are different standards (16-bit data and 8-bit data), it is possible to just plug the drive in with an adapter cable and have the card work out how to talk to it; I've already checked on Usenet and several people are using the DV300 -- or rather the Adaptec card that it's based on -- with the drive I'm thinking of buying.

Just a note to say be careful about adapters... I think the adaptec site has some stuff on this but just as you need a termination at the end of the chain you need an adapter that can terminate the data lines not being used by the CD writer.

Sorry if that sounds confusing but have a hunt around their site. I have used such adapters OK with tape drives.

I had a similar problem when I changed my motherboard to one with built in SCSI. I needed a 68 pin to 50 pin (centronics). I also had to have the cable 2M long (most of those advertised are 1M).

I ended up buying from Dataplex in Slough at apptox £19.

There number is 01753 678405.
