At the moment I edit video on a home built computer-Pent3,1gig. Asus main board with via VT82C694X chipset, Mattrox G450 graphics card Pinnacle DV500 plus capture card. Although it works quite well it is slow to render and slow to encode files.I am thinking of building a new PC to use for multimeadia only when costingI found to my suprise that is cheaper to build a dual athlon PC than a3gig Pent4 PC. Which would be the best for multimeadia work

If the software you are going to use is 'SMP' enabled then you will probably be better going for dual athlons. Software which is SMP enabled include Adobe Premire and photoshop, TMPGenc and mainconcept MPEG encoder.
For encoding, the main concept encoder has an encoding rate of 0.4 to 0.6 real time (dual Athlon 2400+)
