It's the music! It really gives the Bourne trilogy their excitement and pace, and I noticed that Top Gear was using a closely cloned version of the music to jazz up their exotic car dash across Britain.

Yep, the music sets the tone far more than the pictures do. If you doubt that, try watching any action film without the sound.

Get my test cards document, and cards for 625, 525, 720 and 1080. Thanks to Gavin Gration for hosting them.
Camera settings documents are held by Daniel Browning and at the EBU
My book, 'Circles of Confusion' is available here.
Also EBU Tech.3335 tells how to test cameras, and R.118 tells how to use the results.

Disagree. The two complement each other. Try listening to the sound without the pictures, and fast paced-edit. It is not the same. Interesting, in "24", the music creation is very subtle, but really helps the dark mood of the show. Similarly, Life on Mars has wonderful changes of pace - but all are matched by wonderful editing of the pictures.

I am often surprised at how many video producers ignore sound (or use wallpaper music). The real lesson is to mix both sound and pictures perfectly to create an overall mood.

I know radio works, and creates mood .

Has anyone here ever actually listened to the music they use in Eastenders? I have to say that I don't like the programme, but it is watched in my house. If you, like me, just sit there waiting for the next screen argument to start, entertain yourself by listening to every musical track they play (background juke box in the cafe, disco music in the nightclub etc) and working out why it is topical and adds to the scene.

The least subtle one was when Cindy Beal walked back into the Queen Vic and Elton john's 'The bitch is back' was playing.... As far as I have worked out, they never include a music track without it being a subtle nod to a character, storyline or event.
