Feb05 DVD - probs with Ulead MSP 6.5 SE installation; solutions to both.

PLEASE READ ALL OF THE MESSAGES IN THIS THREAD BEFORE DOING anything

Some people are finding that they can't register the program and this is because they have copied in the "**" characters that are on the end of the url given in the readme file.

This is how the url should look:

www.ulead.co.uk/events/cve/msp65

NOT

www.ulead.co.uk/events/cve/msp65**

Sorry!

Having got passed that hurdle, when you go to install the program, you'll find that there is a fault with the install routine.

D'oh!

You'll get an error message asking for a second disk for audio samples - this is because the folder with the sample was left off of the DVD by mistake.

Sorry!

When that error comes up, you will almost certainly believe that all you can do is cancel the installation!

And you'd almost be right.

I'm currently (Jan 6) investigating the possibility of making the audio samples folder available for download in the expectation that if you copy this to a place on the hard drive, it will be possible to complete the install of the program and all samples, simply by pointing the installer to the sound samples at the point where it complains of their absence.

I'll report back here as soon as possible.

However, until we make the samples available, there is a way to avoid the problem - choose the custom option during the install, and then turn off the option to install samples.

Do that, and Media Studio will install successfully but, unfortunately, without any samples at all being installed.

I have come up with a workaround which seems to allow the supplied samples (minus audio) to be installed and this seems okay under Windows XP (and therefore probably under Windows 2000, too), but can't be used for Win98 or Win ME.

However, even though I think it's probably safe to do under XP/Win2K, it's rather inelegant and is something I need to discuss with Ulead to hear the company's view.

I've notified Ulead about the problem but think that a better solution will turn out to be making the sound samples available for download.

Nonetheless, I'll explain what I did, even though, frankly, I'd not recommend anyone does this until I post the all-clear from Ulead about my workaround.

What I did was to run the installer again, after I had successfully installed MSP 6.5SE WITHOUT the samples, but this time pick the choice to modify the installation and then untick everything EXCEPT the samples.

As before this brings up the error message after a while but if you press Ctrl+Alt+Del, to start Task Manager, you can choose to close down the two Ulead elements in the Applications list, and this seems to allow the supplied samples to be installed (but, of course, not the non-existent audio samples).

However, like I said, this is not something I'd recommend trying until I have run it passed Ulead - though it is perfectly okay to do the first installation and simply deselect Samples, which will give you a fully working MediaStudio Pro 6.5 SE installation (minus samples).

In case it hasn't already been reported elsewhere, the same free software can also be found on the cover of the current issue of PC Pro (Feb, #124)-and it works. £3.75 would seem to be a small price to pay to avoid all the time & hassle of trying to fix the problems of the version on CV's cover. I'm sure that the people working on and for PC Pro would agree.

Mind you, I'm hoping by this time tomorrow to have the audio files available for download and to have run up some simple instructions to get a full install.

Well, I now have the audio files, and can see that they total a little over 10MByte.

I've been hassling Ulead for a few days to see if they will host the download.

Perhaps I'll find out on Monday.

Ulead has come to the rescue here.

Please read all the way to the bottom of this posting before carrying out the installation of MSP 6.5E and, ideally, also print out the instructions here, too.

Below is my edited version of the company’s proposed work around, based on its finding that what’s actually missing from the “Samples” folder isn't just the entire folder called “Audio” but also some image files from the folder called “MASK”.

===============
There are two methods described here but in each case the users first need to get the missing files – from here:

www.ulead-europe.de/Sven/MSP7

The required username and password are:
username: MSP7
password: support

Download the two zip files – Audio.zip (9.77MByte in size - sorry!) and MASK.zip (55KByte in size - tiny in fact)

Unzip each into its OWN folder on hard disk – the first called Audio, the second called MASK

Make sure that the files are at the highest level in each of the folders – don’t make the mistake of having, say, another Audio folder in a sub-folder within the Audio folder - which will be the case if you use Winzip's Right-click unzip method (likewise don't have a nested MASK folder in MASK).

There are then two ways forward

Method 1

Place these two folders into a folder on your hard disk called:

Samples

Then, when the installing error appears asking for the folder, browse to the parent folder of \Samples folder that you created.

There will be a second time of asking for a folder - for other sample files that ARE on the DVD - so users will have to browse back to the appropriate place on the DVD drive again.

Method 2/
Alternatively, users can come at it from a differerent direction, involving copying all the MSP6.5 SE stuff from DVD to hard disk, and then copying into the Samples folder there the missing stuff.

Explore the DVD and, from the folder called data, copy the folder called Ulead MSP 6.5 VE to hard disk.

Then copy the Audio folder you created into the
Samples subfolder that you'll find on hard disk within the Ulead MSP 6.5 VE folder you just copied there from the DVD.

Next copy all the samples from the MASK folder you created (from the downloaded MASK.zip file) into the folder within Samples called MASK

Finally, to start the installation for Method 2, run the Setup.exe file that you will find in the MSP 6.5 VE folder that you copied to your hard disk.

Hopefully, the installation from hard disk should complete smoothly!

For the record, these are the files that should be contained in the two downloaded zip files:

Audio.zip (and the Audio folder created from it) should contain:
classic_rock.mp3
jazz.wav
new_age1.wav
new_age2.wav
pipa_ambient.mp3
rock_n_roll.wav

MASK.zip (and the MASK folder created from it) should contain:
CIRCEL2.BMP
CIRCEL3.BMP
CIRCLE1.BMP
DIALINE.BMP
DIALINE2.BMP
HORLI***.BMP
HORLINE2.BMP
HORLINE3.BMP
RECTANG1.BMP
RECTANG2.BMP
RECTANG3.BMP
VER-LINE.BMP
VERLINE2.BMP
VERLINE3.BMP
+++++++++++++++++

Can people please let us have their feedback on how well these instructions work and whether any changes need to be made to them.

Again, sincerely apologies for the inconvenience this foulup has caused readers of (may she rest-in-peace) CV and also Ulead itself.

And thanks to Ulead for all its help!

I've now had an email from Ulead apologising for the problem and saying that they'll try to get the files-download link active as soon as possible - but saying that this is unlikely to be before Monday (Feb 01, 05).
