HELP! Is there anyway to hook up my PD170 to a DSR 1500 so that I can use longer load tapes the mini DV stock. I am shooting a seminar and so I won't have to carry the deck around. Thank you in advance.

Firewire? Not sure about keeping the PD170 from sleeping, though.

So would that be considered the ilink? Really appreciate the input.

Yes, iLink = Sony's name for FireWire (or IEEE 1394).

Do try it for some time, to see if the camera sleeps, or how to stop it from doing that.

AFAIK if there's no tape in the camera it shouldn't sleep - we haven't got a PD170 but we run direct to DVD for lots of jobs without the cameras going to sleep.

Firewire is optional on the early DSR1500s - ours didn't come with it - I think Sony included it with the later 1500AP.

Looks like a chunky USB port on the back panel.

I have a DSR25 - and can't really see much of a difference between recording via firewire or using analogue cables between the 170 and deck. I suppose there is a marginal benefit but if your leads are good quality you'll be fine

Another, but not too safe way, is to leave the cassette door open.
