How do I record video projections???!!!

I was video recording a stage show last night, as I do, and the first half of the show was performed in front of a video projected backdrop.
I could not find a setting in my cameras - 2 x Z5 and 1 x EX1 - that would eliminate the rolling effect. Tried flicker removal setting - no improvement - tried progressive - just made it worse. Did not want to go the 60i route since this will be for PAL DVD output...

Any other bright ideas as to how to get rid of this before I go and film the show again tonight?

Cheers

ask them what frame rate the projector is running at ?
depending upon the source , it could be anything.

Hi Gary,

Thank for trying to help.
I tracked the issue down, though not in time to solve it.
The projection was being played from a macbook, which treated the projector as a second monitor. It was the refresh rate of the monitor not quite being the same as the shutter speed of my cameras that caused this "rolling" effect.
Changing the refresh rate of the monitor would have improved or fixed things, but we didn't figure it out 'till too late.

I've quite successfully videoed shows with projection in that have been played back from a DVD player, and I just couldn't figure out what was different here.

One to put down to experience!

Cheers

It probably depends as much on the projector -- if it is a DLP with a spinning colour wheel then there's probably very little you can do, LCD should be fine. Often setting the shutter speed to the same frequency (or multiple of it) can help -- same with fluorescent tubes abroad.

ideally you'd genlock everything everything to a common reference sync, playback, projection and recording cameras should all be running in sync. You can only do this with high end kit though.
