in my system i have 3 ibm hd`s
1, 17 gig primary master
2, 25 gig primary slave
3, 25 gig secondary master
4, cd rom

drive number 3 developed a fault and was removed from the setup and sent back under warranty.

on restarting the system drive number 2 would not run fast enough. during startup i noticed that the drive setup had changed as follows,

pri. master disk : lba,udma 2
pri. slave disk : none
sec. master disk : chs,mode0
sec. slave disk : cdrom udma 2

in the original setup sec master was the same as pri master

can anyone tell me how to put things back to the way they were.

any help would be appreciated

Are you SURE that the secondary master was previously seen as being an ATA33/mode2 drive?

I ask because, the drive comes by default so that it reports itself as being ATA 66. Lots of motherboard don't know about ATA66, and so treat the drive as an old model and run it in mode 0.

The utility to switch the drive to ATA33 mode is available from IBM's web site. It can also be used to switch the drive back to ATA66 mode if you get a motherboard or controller card that can properly deal with ATA66.
