Scouring through the mags in Tower Records yesterday, I stumbled on an American music magazine called Punk Planet.
What was their cover story?
It wasn't the long awaited return of Bad Religion to Epitaph Records, or the ongoing legal battle between Jello Biafra and the Dead Kennedys. It wasn't even promoting the Van's Warped Festival which will be snaking avross the US very soon...
Nope, the cover story is DESKTOP VIDEO!
Seriously! The cover shows a Canon GL1 (well it is an American mag), computer mouse and a microphone, with the headline BECOME THE MEDIA - REFERENCE GUIDE TO A REVOLUTION.
There's a lot of material there about DV, editing, HTML and streaming. Now Punk Planet doesn't claim to be an authority on DV, so I won't take the features apart or be as mean and nasty as I can be...
But the focus of the features are to show that highly-effective communication is possible on a DIY basis for a moderately small outlay. And if it plants a seed in people's heads to make them join the fray, then that's no bad thing.
Pete
Thats great...but can we now focus our attention on Miss 2001, Cathy Barry ?
Yes,
I'm suprised neither Pete nor Bob have got on top of this...

WEll...I think there's quite a few of the guys that would like to get on top of Cathy...
LOL... Very good PD!

To be honest Pete - it still amazes me that more people aren't doing anything with Digital Video. You can take a horse to water...
The technology has been in affordable reach for the best part of 3 years now, maybe longer - and people are still suprised at what can be done!
It's up to people like yourself to keep things moving forward, both with the mag and all your streaming work etc on Punkband.tv

But a pencil must be lead...
How can anybody get on top of her, there is to much plastic in the way.
Hi Col,
I think you're in the wrong thread. You may find the one entitled 'Cathy Barry' far more entertaining.
This one's a punk thread, not a porn thread - way too straight-edge and responsible for such talk!
Pete - you're right, this is'nt the Cathy Barry thread, but there is only the one..so hey..lets turn this into one...there can never be enough..well..IMHO.....

Sorry, but no.
While I understand how compelling an instinct voyeurism can be, and can appreciate the very basic appeal of rude pictures, we must still take time to appreciate the finer things in life.
Personally, I think there's room for punk in everyone's cultural diet. No matter who you are or what you do, there's a nose ring and mohawk to suit you!
Pete
How about Goth..? I'm Goth...
we need a Goth thread...someone start a Goth thread....I wonder if Cathy Barry is Goth...
why is my Boss looking over my shoulder like that ?
I saw AFI play the other night.
They're a punk band but they're very goth with it.
We could make this an AFI thread. Incidentally, they're a breathtaking live band - imagine a bunch of rag dolls from a Tim Burton movie dancing on hyperactive wires...
Pete
Sounds cool..I think my gurly
has heard fo them but i'm pretty much in the dark. We saw the Sisters back in Feb, OffSpring in Jan and last December we saw My Ruin...unfortunatly Snake River Conspiracy ducked out of support for one reason or another...would love to see Cradle of Filth sometime soon, a group Eileen Daly is connected with...
I think AFI supported the Offspring on their last tour.
You might have seen them (at a distance, as Offspring played Wembley).
How I detest huge venues...
Pete
Interesting to see the Dead Kennedy's get a mention after all these years. How well I remember the grief my 'Nazi Punks F*k Off' badge used to cause me - outright indignation from the right-on radicals who didn't take the time to read it properly and threats of violence from the glue-sniffing skinheads when it had to be explained to them that it was an anti-racist gesture and they were the very types the song was talking about.
Bugger all to do with video but any footage of the time would have made for some interesting viewing now.
......Oh mi god Pete
you're joking ? Yeah we saw Offspring at Wembley, but we arrived too late to see the support, damn..missed out on them, I knew Ali knew the name from somewhere...
Big venues..yup..they suck, it was great seeing the SOM at the Astoria in Feb, long may they live...
I was fortunate to see The Sisters of Mercy when they were really good, i.e., before Wayne Hussey ever got involved and I've seen them several times since. However, I wasn't as impressed with their recent tour.
Remember Sigue Sigue Sputnik? Saw them the other week in the back room of a bar. Can't claimed to have ever been a fan and still not but it was a night out after all.
Punk's not dead - just smells that way!

AFI are signed to Nitro Records which is owned by Dexter Holland (Offspring's singer). He's very good about dragging bands from his label around the globe.
Pete
Wow, i'm impressed,
The sisters before Wayne....that was about the time of Ben Gunn, I remember he left around about 83/84 when they were releasing 'Temple of Love' for the first time..I have that 12 inch actually. Yeah..Tony whatsisname...I remember when he grabbed the Sisters Bass back in 1990...I shuddered then but it may have been because I was missing sweet Pat...ahh...The sisters, if only they'd bother to do some studio work, perhaps they are competing with New order for most laziest band ?
Tony James, who coincidentally plays for Sigue Sigue Sputnik. And Generation X ( with Billy Idol for those not as old as me )before that.
And Patricia Morrison is now better known as Mrs Dave Vanian and plays bass for The Damned. Miserable bint though won't allow camcorders or digital cameras to be used at gigs, in stark contrast to Rat Scabies quip when I once asked if he minded me taking in my ( stills ) camera which was 'You can bring the whole f**king BBC for all I care!'
Ah, those were the days.
Won't allow cameras eh ?
Probably due to the fact that she does'nt look half as good as she did when she was Andy's doll...the last time i saw her she was playing Opera queen to Pop will eat itself when they performed Chicolina..or..however you spell her anme..on TOTP, whatever happened to the poppies huh ? Perhaps they should cut a single on another Porn Star...someone up and Cumming...Cathy Barry springs to mind
I thought we had agreed to leave Cathy Barry out of this. As Ben nearly said,
You can lead a horticulture, but you cant make her think
I never agreed to that !!
I think the best thing we can do for her is to sling a Bass around her shoulder and get her to stand next to Mr Eldritch...it might inspire him to release some new material...
Peter, I assume you know that your quote comes from Dorothy Parker, who had been challenged by an American bimbo to produce a sentence with the word "horticulture" in it. She was the source of an incredible number of sharp one-liners.
Sorry Alan, you've lost me on that one...
So...you can remember that Dorothy
Parker was the source for the Quote, but for a further 20 points, who was the American Bimbo who asked the question ?
Sorry Pete (Wells), not you but Peter (Golden).
Aha!
Different Peter!
Darn! For a moment, I thought I was naturally witty!!
Had I remember her name, I would have given it, I like collecting points. But, sadly, I donm't know it. Maybe a Dictionary of Quotations will have it, I'll have a look sometime.
Wasn't it Jayne Mansfield?
Elements of Pop Will Eat Itself went on to become Bentley Rhythm Ace - so now you know!
Very erudite mr Roberts, as one might expect from a man of your kah liy ber, but did you also know that she said apropos of pronunciation that: The 'T' is silent as in Jean Harlow. and that Katherine Hepburn ran the whole gaumut of emotion .....from A to B.
Where are these wordsmiths in the 21st centuary?
pip pip
Thanks Peter, yes, I've got a barrel-ful of them. She was truly a wonderful source of the barbed witicism, the Algonquin set must have been an exciting group to belong to.
I was there last August, and to my shame, failed to make the pilgrammage. I believe it's still open.
Folks might find this link entertaining. I think it's even suitable for children!
But I don't see what it has to do with punk.
Pete
Good stuff Pete, and only three or four of them are in the Penguin Dictionary of Quotations.
