It's a very long time since I last watched Corrie but I was interested to hear that it will be going HD from tomorrow, complete with a new set of opening titles.

I think they've gone a leetle bit overboard with the shallow depth of field! :)

Yup looks like the usual canon 5d with 90% of the frame out of focus! Hope they didn't spend a lot of money on them coz they look cheap and indie filmic!

Also looks like a bit like the ch5 family affairs titles from 6 years ago.

Also noticed the overboard DOF in last night's episode of Lewis.

I drink to steady my nerves. Last night I got so steady I couldn't move. Wedding video essex

According to Gavin, the current series of Lewis uses the new Arri Alexa

Speaking personally, I felt that the DOF aided the storytelling. It was the compression artifacts on the panning shots that jarred.

"Corrie" going HD???? What have I been not missing?. Does the ordinary person who are clued to these soaps know the difference???
Mind you i did watch "FlashForward" and what a shamble of a ending. They must have run out of money to give it a proper ending.
But i did enjoy the series.

Well obviously if you have a flat screen TV everything is in HD anyway so I don't know what all this fuss about 'going HD' is, really. :)

Hi Stuart621. My flat screen TV is only HD ready. I would need a HD tuner to reap the benefit of true HD, but as my eyes are not as good as I would like, I won`t bother.

As for the new Corrie titles, cleaning my glasses didn`t help. My wife remarked on how foggy they were – the titles that is!

I know, John. I was only joking to echo Maxwell's comment about what people think about HD. Let's face it, most people are happy watching SD 4:3 pictures stretched to 16:9 on a 50" plasma and thinking they're watching a great picture!

Well if you believe almost every video forum, "I want to achieve a filmic look" = "you need something called shallow depth of field, all professionals use a Letus", so I expect the Corrie Execsasked for the same thing and got it! I firmly believe that for most people, their first flat screen happened at the same time as freeview/freeserve/sky arrived in their home, and compared to analogue and the absence of snow no wonder they're impressed with squished SD.

My wife often watches Corrie upstairs, and I walk in to see her watching it on the analogue channel, snowy and nasty without even noticing!

Watched some of the monday night programme and it was similar to The Bill where the ext shots were fine but the studio set's way underlit for HD.

Hate the titles and it shows where a one foot DOF on a pillar, slate, post box and sign left or right of frame is not what shallow DOF is about.

Now that ITV1 has gone HD it is not possible on the HD channel to have subtitles "for some considerable time, possibly next year" according to ITV.
You would have thought that they would have made sure that ALL the services available on SD would be transferred to HD. Other wise why bother as most programmes still are in SD.It is surprising the number of people who use subtitles if you look on the Web.
In the case of Corrie the character Gail talks so quietly even with subtitles it is had to tell what she is saying (taking dramatic speech levels to a new low)

No doubt like regional tv and teletext, subtitles will be the next cost saving exercise from ITV, the fine is cheaper than having to do it and ofcom have shown that they will let them get away with their lack of public service franchise commitment.

Now the new Taggart titles are how it should be done! Some narrow depth of field but not enough to make most of the picture unwatchable! The new version of the theme may take some getting used to, though...

Shallow DOF can look superb in the right context but to just use it on every shot is a waste of its impact, I am surprised that they didn't do it wobbly cam as well to make Corrie more Earthy and like the Matrix? Or maybe that trainee director was working on The Bill at the time:D

Last time I saw "Corrie" Violet Carson was in it :)

The whole subtitle thing is a mess anyway. I would have hoped the HD chanels when they do get subtitles will recognise that people watching HD will probably not have a 12" screen and will make the subtitles more subtle and befitting to larger screens. Alas if BBC HD is anything to go by this will not be the case.

Has anyone noticed the subtitles on the iplayer downloads. They are the same size as on a DVD and at the bottom of the screen. I live in hope that one day all subtitles will be like that.

Mind I have seen things on iplayer that have the subtitles for another program altogether but that is probably/hopefully rare. ;)
