Gents' here's my first problem.
Weekly, I post on a message from Mark Schubin, detailing lots of useful stuff.
I can't post it this week because the message is 94,000 characters long, and the board's maximum posting limit is 10,000 characters. The postings are necessarily long because there's a lot going on. Is this limit fundamental, or can it be reset?

And, I much prefer a 24 hour clock. Is the 12 hour clock a fixture?

And, just discovered, the board's got an automatic censor. Chirpy was discussing Rear Window, director Alfred Hitch****, and the censor dived in.....

Alan,
There must be a way to turn off the censor, I'm sure.
The max character limitation I don't know about, but I guess we control that, too.
If that's the case, and since we have never had any issues in the past with excessively long posts, I'm sure we'd change that, too.
The clock I'm sure can be changed, but this is very much a matter of personal preference. We'll think about the logistics and come up with a decision.
We'll talk about these matters tomorrow and one of us will come back here with a response asap.

yes - everything mentioned can be changed.
we'll look into the max post size as soon as poss, 'cause i'd say that is very important.
as we've said, we can, and will 'tune' the discussion forums as we go along.
cheers,
PD

What I'm seeing is "All times are GMT The time now is 10.38" but the time is 11.30 BST?
Hi Bob,
A further search of Google has revealed the whole thread which I've copied and pasted individually. Please note, all typos are yours and theirs not mine. :)
Thanks for the progress chaps. Time of posting is 12.16BST, we'll see what happens this afetrnoon.

The clock is 10 mins fast - and, right now, I can't see anyway to have a 10min offset to compensate for this but, probably, a better option would be to reset the clock on our server, which, presumably is ten minues fast.
However, people need to know that the clock information can be displayed differently to guests and members - and if you are a member who is looking but not signed in, you won't be using the clock setting that you chose (more accurately are able to choose), in the user control panel (User CP) that appears at the top left of the page when you are signed in.
Bob C
Oh, and to customise your own settings in the User CP, choose "Settings & Options", then "Edit Options".

Looking good Bob. I can wait for news on posting size limits. Mark Schubin issues huge documents that I post on each week, full of hugley important and interesting stuff (and lots of dross), this week's is 94k characters long
Alan,
Post away - you should not have any problems now.
Bob C
Cheers Bob.
The best thing with the post character limit is not to quote someone waffling above you

I don't, ever. But the mesages I post on from Mark Schubin are very long, detailed and stuffed with useful information. That's how I found the limit in the first place.
Ah okay Bob managed to fix this one for you

That's nuffink, the time I visted was on the 1.1.70 at 1am, most unlikely as I was in my cot then.
This is due to the migration, and the old forums not storing the data of last activity in a way the migration could pick up, sorry.
Dave,
Thanks!!
But (and ain't there always a but?), have you noticed that the names of the posters don't tie up with the messages?
;)
Bob
Hi Bob,A further search of Google has revealed the whole thread which I've copied and pasted individually. Please note, all typos are yours and theirs not mine. :)
If you mean the fact that my name is in the column on the left, that's because you can't just copy and paste the whole thread - it has more than the regulation amount of smilies in it. So I copied and pasted each individual reply and put the name of the person who posted that reply in the 'Title' box above their reply together with the original day and date the message was posted. I'm just about to do the same with another thread I found. It's pretty time consuming but it looks more like the original thread (if a job's worth doing...etc). If you can think of a way of replacing my name on the left with the originator's name, even better. As I'm not a moderator I don't have that privilege.
Even as a moderator, I don't think I can do that either. I think it'd be simpler just to list it all without trying to recreate the "look", it's the info that's ,valuable, not the cosmetics. Having said that, well done for getting this far.
BTW, in some of the other threads I didn't use Google to find all the missing posts, some came via the MSN Search Engine.
Hi Bob,
Don't know if this has been mentioned yet but the drop down menus don't work properly in firefox at the main page http://www.dvdoctor.net/

Hi Bob,Don't know if this has been mentioned yet but the drop down menus don't work properly in firefox at the main page http://www.dvdoctor.net/

Guido (sorry, I'd said Gary!),
Thanks for that!
Weird - only seems to be on those menus that have an ad below them.
I'll let people know and we'll see what we can do.
Cheers
Bob
Guido,
I now understand the problem - why it's there and what we can do about.
The problem will go away completely as and when we are placing 'proper' ads into the slots below the menus.
By that I mean, ads created to our specs. These will be in animated-gif format - and I'll be working with others through this week as they make the first concerted push for advertising on the site (probably shouldn't have said that - people won't be taking calls from me now!).
These spots below the menus, I'm hoping, will be among the first to be taken up .
The problem is caused by the format of the sort of ad-hoc ads we are putting in there now - some in Flash (which ALWAYS grabs the highest level) and some in JavaScript, which sometimes does and sometimes doesn't do the same thing.
Iain, our site developer found a safe hack that resolves these conflicts for those browsing with Internet Explorer but the only hacks he's come across for other browsers, including Firefox, involve a lot of dodgy Java that he believes is unsafe to use - and if that's what he believes, I know it to be true.
So, it's better that the problem is tackled at source - and the best way for us to do that is to have in place ads in animated-gif format.
Oh, and you may not realise, but there is no need to use the menu drop-downs if what you want to do is simply use the menus to access the DVdoctor stuff.
Just clicking on the menu header itself will take you directly to the relevant area.
However, currently, there are menu headers which don't have related DVdoctor content.
Indeed, Sod's Law being all-powerful, only one of the menus affected by the ads actually has any DVdoctor contents - the other three that do have DVdoctor content aren't affected!
Bob C
Quick update - more of those menu slots have been filled.
