At least Seagate aren't being coy about admitting there's a problem with some of their drives.

On the Seagate forums there is rumour of a firmware update next week - and unofficial advice to keep affected drives that are functional continually powered up....

yikes,

just powered mines down this morning after backing up my Macbook Pro as its away back to Apple for a new system board and no doubt the hard disk will be refreshed. Fingers crossed the OneTouch 4 will be ok.

Seagate have issued a firm ware update and will offer free data recovery

The Firmware update doesn't work successfully for 500GB drives, and has been pulled.
DO NOT APPLY IT if you have a download of it.
