Hi there.
What am I doing wrong and how do I correct it, please?
Department moved up to a Sony HVR Z7E...
Using FCP 5.1.4 , capture settings unchanged from previous DVCAM settings...
If I transfer DV files from CF CARD and import to FCP timeline, the audio needs to be rendered, yet if I were to capture the same sequences from the simultaneous DV recording the audio is as expected...
Do I need to adjust a camera setting or an FCP setting to avoid the need to render all these clips?
(also the CF card supplies .dv filkes and corresponding .IDX files, what function do the .IDX files serve, please?)

Re: Operator error - audio
Is there a camera setting to record audio at either 32kHz or 48kHz?
The default might be 32kHz (which it shouldn't be really). If so, change it to 48kHz.

Re: Operator error - audio
Hi
.dv files are for iMovie, and aren't directly supported by FCP. A .dv file is muxed audio/video in one data stream, and FCP needs the audio in a seperate file. That's why it has to do a render on import to an FCP timeline.
It might be better to use MPEG Streamclip to batch convert your card's .dv files to .mov DV movies before import to FCP.

Thanks for input, guys
Mooblie :- Recordings are set for 48kHz
Paul D :- will give this a try, sounds promising...hadn't appreciated that DV was Muxed and .mov files were not...

Re: Operator error - audio
TEST CLIP 2mins15secs in length... needs audio rendered...Render takes 15secs
via MPEG streamclip, exported to QuickTime .mov takes 1min15secs.
Audio is fine but VIDEO needs to be rendered!!
another 48 secs to do this... would I need to adjust my capture preset to avoid the render?
Ideally, I'd rather not have to render audio or video, rather save time and disk space...
I thought one of the benefits of going 'tapeless' was the speed and simplicity of capture from the card but seems I'm not savvy enough to know which settings to adjust to allow this...

Re: Operator error - audio
Hi Brendan,
I'm not sure (and maybe Paul D will come along and clarify this) but the later versions of FCP have the software to Capture & Transfer from card. And this might be the where your problems are coming from in that there is obviously something about the files from the card that your version of FCP doesn't understand.
A possible solution would be to use clipwrap to transfer the files you can download a free trial here
Although it's main purpose is to re-wrap HDV files it may just get around the problem you are having with the DV files. I can't guarantee that though, I've never tried it for that, but at least the free trial will confirm it either way.

Re: Operator error - audio
I used to have a Z7 and it was a great little camera with a lot of flexibility, I did all the IPTV test video's with it although tended to use HDV all the time.
Sony provided a plug in for FCP V7 but I never was able to get it to work on my system so I bought clipwrap and used that to re-wrap the footage to a useable format for FCP and it all seemed to work very well.
I am not sure if FCP 5 can handle these files directly so it may be work re-wrapping via clipwrap before to start editing.
I still have a clipwrap V1.0 licence if you wish to try it out, I have send you the details although it may be worth trying their trial version to see if it helps: http://www.divergentmedia.com/clipwrap/trial
