Problems with making a QT movie from ProRes timeline

Hi
I have a 9min40sec ProRes timeline of AVCHD footage, sub title track, two audio tracks, one insert edit track. Video plays perfectly in timeline. I have completed all the renders and checked the timeline for errors and all seems ok. I then select all and export to QT Movie.
My first attempt at 1080p produced a 8.38Gb file, which played 75% then stalled and returned to the start. Not good. Then I tried a 720p same result and finally a smaller 960x720 and alas this stalled at 80%. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Does the same happen if you export a reference file?

You're trying to play them in what? QTPro player?
Can you re-import them into FCP and play them there?
What does MediaInfo Mac say about your files?
Can you export them to something both HD and playable via Compressor?

Also, check the QT settings - are they 'same as sequence' or something else? Is the Prores standard or HQ? HQ requires some serious system resources to work well. I would only ever use standard prores except for broadcast.

Wow this HD stuff is very tricky! I had several goes and then seemed to find a work around. I exported the timeline to Quick Time Conversion at 1280 x 720 Compression H.264, Frame Rate Current, Keyframes 24, Frame Reordering, Multi Pass, Quality High, Data Rate 1500 kbits/sec, Optimised for Download. Audio AAC, 48khz. Quality Normal, Target Bit Rate 128.
This took four hours to render and produced a 121.4Mb file.
I uploaded this to YouTube this morning and as I am the last property at the end of a very long line from the exchange, it took 45 minutes to upload.
I am pleased with the quality compared to DV.

Let me know what you think?

Shame. You shouldn't have HAD to do a QT conversion. Were you never able to export a straight QT Movie (with current timeline settings) in the end?

How big/powerful a Mac, Dawn?

I have an iMac 3Ghz Dual Core. 4Gb Ram, with the new version of Final Cut Studio, Snow Leopard all latest updates.

An export by reference to Compressor, then add your compression preset (a specific HD Youtube preset is available from Ken Stone's site) and activate QMaster to allow how ever many cores you have to compress, would probably have given you a better and faster result - FCP / Quicktime conversion is not as good as using Compressor.
