How do you get to be anything other than a "Junior Member"...?
By the way this BB is 1000 times better than anything that has gone before.

In fact I really can't think if anything that I'd change.

Superb.

I think it just goes by how many posts you've made. I think 30 is the magic number, I must be near than now !

What comes after 60?
"Honourable Member"?
"Large Member"?
With 256 postings, the Desktop Video - General topic is by far the largest. Should it be split?

can't count either, it's around 240, not 256

If it used "Large Member" I think that we'd spend too long sniggering to write anything useful.
Is there seriously anything after "Member" though..?

Turns out my original question wasn't as daft as I originally thought.

Do you mean I've got to post FIFTY times to get rid of junior ??
Of course you do, but by posting this I am one step closer!!!

Any suggestions of titles to use instead of
Junior Member and Member.
I find them a bit condescending.

You could always just call everyone a "member" straight away...
Otherwise, how about, "Rookie"..?

Is there anything after "member"..?

No, there is nothing after member in the hierarchy, although there are moderators and administrators, who have system rights that no one else has.
I reckon your suggestion of having member, instead of junior member is a good.

What I now need is something to use instead of member.

As from the answers to readers problems there
are some readers more adept at DTV, over the months Bob could consider them as Advisers in
Adobe Premier,Media Studio Pro,etc.

The obvious is "Senior Member" or just "Senior", but in this case I would also suggest raising the number of postings that qualifies you perhaps to 80 / 100...
It's a shame that there aren't more ranks, you could have great fun with imposing a military rank structure.

What do you think...?

Should it not be quality not quantity in regards to rank. Maybe things like proper spelling and puncuation would be a a good measure aswell?

When you can find a way of measuring such and implementing it into a Web Based BBS then I think Bob would be happy to use it.
Until then.....

How about Contributor for anyone who has reached the magic threshold for message posting?

Contributor works for me, and thus, Contributor it is. Oh, and I've lowered the threshold, to 20 postings.
And, you, Richard, have been given instant promotion, to Administrator, on account of services rendered to the mag and its readership, with your series on Media Studio Pro 5.

Cheers

Bob
If someone gets promoted for services to the magazine, might it work the other way around? Could a long-serving, registered user write a one-off item for the magazine? This strikes me as a realistic, temporary solution for developing the magazine content.

Your mission (should you choose to accept it) would be to approach long-serving and apparently sensible bulletin board contributors and offer a flat fee for them to write an article on their own experiences/trials/successes in the wonderful world of computer video. Or someone might be willing and able to re-write a regular feature such as the Introduction to Desktop Video.

Alternatively you could post a request for any user to post you a 500 word synopsis and you choose the best.

Of course there's the issue of incompatible file formats and you could end up with dire, unusable material, but at least it might make a few more of us appreciate the hours that you put in on our behalf.

mal

Also, would your union take a dim view of this?

Personally i find the idea of adding hierarchical layers repulsive and quite sad: there may be some need for distinction between admin/ non-admin, but for the rest of us it all seems a little pointless and petty. If the important factor for most people in judging the quality of someone's response is the number of responses they have previously posted, then why not just list the number of responses instead of grouping them into ranks?
I do think that Mal's idea of getting people who contribute to the BB to contribute to the mag is a good idea (as long as its well edited). It would enable the magazine to broaden the scope of its content while at the same time providing much needed income for those of us who cannot generate income from our equipment because we can't get the bloody stuff to work.
