I'm picking up what sounds like internal noise with my otherwise excellent Canon HV20. Does anyone have a recommendation for a compact(ish) external mic to fit the top shoe of the HV20?

Best regards,
Kruger

Just a small point, does the Canon HV20 have a standard hot shoe for attaching the mics to the camera.

Apparently the shoe is a standard size physically and so should be OK, except that the shoe is only "hot" for Canon mics and so will need to use batteries for third-party brands. Kruger,
Amazon forums are new to me. Are there forums for other camcorders which might be of interest . I ask this question for I don't know how to access them on Amazon.

I use a MKE400 with my Canon HV30 which works very well.

Like all external mics you need a good fluffy for cutting out wind noise, although it does have a switchable wind filter.

I have the HV 30 and like your HV 20 it does whine when recording. What I use is the excellent Rode NTG 2 with a short XLR to 3.5mm lead and a mic bracket, set the manual recording level to about a third and this should improve the sound, or try this, mini disc recoerder and a lav mic, adjust the sound level manually and sync the sound in post I find the mini disc recording stay in sync over a good period of time, hide the mic on your talent and get them to narrate a good distance from the camera the results are excellent.

Excellent - thanks for those tips. That should help get the sound to the same high standard as the video!

If you don't mind a mount/bracket, the Azden SGM1X is a nice mic for the price. I did a video review on it a while back which you can find through my youtube page.

Reason for the bracket is the mic is a bit too long and you'll see it in frame while zoomed out if you mount it to the cams shoe.

Mounted on my Canon Vixia HFS100
