What is the best way to reformat the hard drives & wipe the system clean so that I can re-install Windows XP?

Cary,
If you boot your machine from the xp disk, there is an option there to re-format, the quick format option only re-writes the boot sector but, if you use the standard option, your disks will be low level formatted, removing all information.

What I normally do is use a win start-up disk (even an old win98 one will do) and at the A: prompt FDISK the system drive, this will wipe the MBR, then do a full (not quick) format.

MBR = Master Boot Record

I do the same as Pete, boot the system using the XP disk and then delete the partition and then create a new one and then do an NTFS format..

Same as Pete & Doogs - Format to NTFS from CD.

You might have to go into the bios to make the CD the boot drive - then format. if I am wrong I am sure someone will correct me.

I also take this as a opportunity to create partitions on the H/Disk.

Yes, I should have said that the actual format needs to be done from the XP disk, unless you're still happy with FAT32 of course! :eek:
