Sata drive won't work in external enclosure

I have a Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 9 120GB SATA 150 hard drive that works fine in the computer but when I place it in an external enclosure it can't be read or mounted by either my Win XP PC or my Macbook Pro.
I have tried various external enclosures, with USB and with firewire connectors but the drive will not show up in either computer when connected. The same enclosures work fine with other SATA 150 drives but not with the 120GB drive.
Can anyone suggest what may be wrong? Do I need to set any jumpers on the drive?
Why would a drive work fine when installed in the computer but not show up when placed in an external enclosure?
Thanks a lot for any advice.
