Hi,

1. Wheres the best position to place the sennheiser ew100 receiver on say a Sony VX2000/2100. It comes with velcro tape and the only position i can see is to place it on the block to the r/h/s behind the lens.

Just wondered if there are any devices that can be attached to the receiver & fixed to the hot shoe.

The new Sennheiser evolution G2 has a special bracket that attaches to the hot shoe.

It should be available on its own in the near future.

It should also hold G1 receivers and is adjuatable for varuious positionings.

Bottom right in the picture.

Thanks John,

I was hoping that mine may have been the G2 model as my supplier (Prestons) was out of stock in January and was waiting new deliveries. But on delivery found it to be the G1.

Wonder if the G2 has easier access to switching on/off. I consider my digits relatively small but even my 11 year old daughter has difficulty switching on the plug on transmitter and she has nails. Anyway now sorted, I'll carry a matchstick behind my ear to turn the units on/off.

I intend to try out this new piece of kit over the weekend so no doubt I will be back with more queries.

Crossover period is now.

G1 is going out and G2 is coming in.

It depends what you want. Some G2 is in stock now.

If you want G2 make sure you ask the shop for G2.

try keene or other gadget people to buy a shoe with a small plate on it. You can then araldite a larger plate and add velcro.

The Sennheiser radio receiver comes with some 'industrial strength' self adhesive Velcro, and THE most perfect place for this is on the flat portion of the VAP housing at the front of the lens. It's out of the way of focus and zoom rings, allows you to fit the hood and converter lenses, and a short XLR cable plugs it into the system.

That's a bit small, so here it is bigger.

evolution G2 now has a special mounting plate (see picture of G2 system above) that you clip the receiver on to and sits in the cameras shoe mount.

It should be available as a seperate item soon.

Be warned, in my case at least, the vecro did not come with industrial strength glue to attach itself to the reciever ie velcro remained attached to the camera, reciever remained attached to the cable, floating in mid air!!
I now use the supplied belt clip to slip over the right hand belt loop on the camera (Canon XL1 with G1 version ) Otherwise a brilliant product which I wouldn't be without.

That's why I mentioned the new mount ;)

But it is always best to first wipe the surface with isopropyl alchohol and dry it first so the glue sticks better.

That's just what I did John. Who'd be without their isopropyl alcohol, hey? I suspect that the Sony VAP housing is silver painted plastic, so the industrial strength glue is holding the velcro to the paint, which is 'stuck' to the plastic. Even so (unlike Robo) I'm sure my velcro is stuck there forever. The longer it sticks, the harder it sticks.

Thanks Tom, That's where I suggested it goes in my original post.

You say "and a short XLR cable plugs it into the system". Where does the XLR cable come in from the receiver to camera?

Presumably your picture shows your set up for shooting using either on camera mounted mic or a wireless mic and you switch over the cable feed to the camera.

John, can you post a contact number where I can purchase the new mount that can be used for the G1.

Thanks

The shotgun and the radio receiver XLR plug into the Beachtek, and this then plugs into the mic-in socket on the VX2k, effectively cutting out the internal mics. It's a very quick operation to pull out this plug to make the in-builts take over.

Unfortunately found out from Sennheiser that the new bracket that comes with the G2 system will not fit the G1 receiver so its Velcro I'm afraid.

Will the new bracket work with the evolution 100.

Also can you purchase an XLR cable for the receiver?

Yes, yes - as far as I'm aware.

G2 uses the same clip as G1 so I see no reason why it should not work - unfortunately we do not have a G2 clip available to check it with at the moment.

XLR lead is the CL 100 for 100 series or CL 500 for 500 series (500 series has a balanced out, 100 is unbalanced).

This is the reply I received from M Allison at Sennheiser.

"To: Phil,

There is no hot shoe mount for the Evolution receiver (bodypack), only
velcro tape.
The K6 hot shoe adapter is the MZQ 6 at £37.40
An XLR socket and jack cable can be made to order at a cost of £40; length
to be specified.
Spares orders are subject to £2.50 p&p + vat.

Regards - Michael"

Glad to see your back John.

Can you advise if the cable from XLR(Female) to 3.5mm Jack would/should be balanced.

Not sure if cameras like the VX2000 only accept unbalanced inputs and cameras with XLR inputs allow a balanced input.

Mike Allison is in spares and the adaptor is new and a sales product so he is unlikely to have all the spares info on G2 yet.

The literature only came in a day or two ago.

The hot shoe camera adaptor is called a CA 2 and should be available shortly.

The cable from the receiver should have a male XLR - unbalanced if 100 series (CL 100), balanced if 500 series (CL 500).

The input lead to the transmitter would have the female XLR and the transmitter input is unbalanced.

Many thanks John for your advice, going a little off topic from the original post, but the cable (XLR(F) to 3.5mm miniJack) I was referring to would be one from the K6/ME66 direct to camera, no transmitters or receivers used.

Question is, should this cable be wired balanced or unbalanced.

Many thanks again.

After my Evo 100 receiver and velcro parting company once I switched to using a generic mobile phone belt holder (around £12 from Asda about 12 months ago) which clips over the webbing at the front of the hand grip on my VX2000.

Holds the receiver securely, quite easy to remove as and when required.

It depends on the camera - assuming the camera has a stereo unbalanced input on a mini-jack it should be wired:-

XLR Pin-1 to Mini-jack sleeve (screen)
XLR Pin-2 to Mini-jack tip & ring (signal to both channels)
XLR Pin-3 to XLR Pin-1 - or - to Mini-jack sleeve (screen)

I hope this is clear.

Ideally the mini-jack should be one of the brand new Neutrik metal rt-angled mini-jacks "Tiny Plug".

This should be the best around and has a decent cable grip - I would not trust any other connector.
