I hope anyone could tell me how to know whether a Sony Battery is genuine or imitation . I am looking for some extra batteries for my Sony PD 170 and here in the Netherlands shops offer them from 70 to 190 euro . all claiming that they are REAL Sony . some prices seem too good to be true . I have heard of imitation Sony batteries at the Global dvc website , here in the Netherlands , but on their website the info on how to detect a REAL Sony battery does not help ( me ) much .
does anyone have good ideas ?
thank you.

Some pirate NPF batteries look quite different from the genuine Sony article, and I have a 960 replacement that doesn't pretend to be anything other than a cheaper alternative to the 'real thing'. It works on the VX2000 and FX1 and Z1 beautifully.

Genuine Sony batteries can probably best be recognised by the distinctive Sony bubble packaging and the hologram that Sony use, but of course these too can be cloned. So if you're worried, take a close-up look before you hand over the euros.

Hi Christiaan,
I am aware that some cameras recognise non-sony batteries as such and don't work.

I think there are several categories here.
i)Genuine sony.
ii) Non sony m/f making fully functional batteries which are compatible with Sony (canon etc).
iii) Non sony m/f making inferior batteries.

For my Sony Z1E, I bought non Sony batteries from 'Gearhouse broadcast'. They are big suppliers to the trade (wholsesale)- world cup events etc.
So, I put my trust in them - rather than the label.

As spotting forgeries is difficult - suggest you do the same and put your trust in the retailer, rather than the product itself.

non sony ...

thank to you both ! I have just received a NP 960 ( non Sony ) and it seems to work great , 780 minutes .
hopefully somebody ( sony ? ) someday will find a solution to this fake being offered in stores or on the internet . the next thing will be that we will have to worry if our expensive purchased Sony camera is genuine ...

And let's hope there isn't a recall of genuine Sony camcorder batteries soon. Then all those who bought non-Sony compatibles will be laughing.

My (poor) attempt at humour.
In a world where anything can be copied/stolen I have no way of knowing if that is you typing the message or an imposter.

Psssssst . . Don't tell anyone, but Dave Smith is a clone. Just look in the telephone directory and you will find thousands of them. All cloned from the original whose first name was Adam.
