The Western Digital oddity

There is an oddity about Western Digital drives that makes them much less suitable for use as a Master when drives are in caddies. Western Digital make a jumper distinction between use as a Master with no Slave present and with a Slave present. Other drives have alternate jumper settings, but the WD alone will not work properly if the jumper is not set correctly for the drive situation.

The moral is: If you want to use a WD HDD in a caddy then it has to be set as a Slave or you will be forever taking off the caddy covers to reset the jumper.
