Working with DSLR footage in Final Cut

I'm trying to edit a wedding in Final Cut. Every time I import footage from my 7d it needs rendering and is taking hours to process. HDV footage ,however, goes straight into the timeline without the need to render.

I can't help but feel I'm making a very basic mistake here and it's costing lots time. I've tired everything I can think of, but have hit a brick wall. There has got to be an easier way.

Is there a piece of 3rd party software that gets round this issue?

Thanks very much for your time.

you need to convert the files first as the h.264 can't be edited natively on final cut. You can get a plug-in for final cut that will convert during log and capture (google final cut 7D plug-in) or you can use compressor to convert the files. Ideally these convert the files to pro res.

However the best and simplest way I've found is to use MPEG stream clip to convert the files. Pro Res is the best but MPEG Sc lets you convert them to any file type. so if you are editing mainly HDV you can convert the 7D files to HDV and makes things simpler.

Have a look
