XP Stuttering playback.

I have a duel boot Win764bit /XP Pro.32bit. XP has been used to edit using Prem. Pro 1.5 with no problems for several months.

I recently added another 4Gig of ram for Win7 and Premiere Elements, now total 8Gig.
Now Prem. Pro. On the XP partition, will not playback smoothly. I have three HDD`s two I use for editing. One of them was badly fragmented and XP took three hours before I cancelled it. Win7 did it in about 2o min.

Premiere Elements play back on Win7 is perfectly ok!
Any ideas please?

rather than defrag, when I ran PCs for editing, I'd shift the files that I wanted to keep, then reformat the drive, and shift the files back.

It was a lot quicker

dunno about the XP thing ( I ran XP )

I think adding 4Gig ram to XP Pro.32bit might not have achieved anything.  It probably only see 3.5Gig of all the ram while the 64bit will see it all.

As for defragmenting, search for Auslogics Disc Defrag.  It's free and do the job in fraction of the time.

Re: XP Stuttering playback.
Thanks Dave.

Just spent a long time moving 80Gig of files. XP was slow, so changed to Win7 and they moved a lot quicker. Reformatted, but playback still the same.

Re-imaged the XP partition, and that speeded up the drive, only to find Prem. Pro. 1.5 cannot be activated, and the PC freezes. This always happens after a re-image, but always activated before. Prem. Elements plays back ok.

Then Win7 wouldn`t boot, so did a recovery. All working now, except Prem. 1.5. I don`t think it`s supported now, but should it activate?

Thanks Tibor.

That is true, XP sees about 1.9Gig. I have used that program before but forgot!!

Adobe have turned off the activation servers for all products older than CS2 "due to a technical glitch".

However, they do appear to be giving away CS2 for free!

Premiere Pro 2 and its serial number are right at the bottom, or you could download the entire suite. There's really nothing to stop you as far as I can figure out.

Thanks Mark M.

It`s a shame, because it has been very reliable, never crashed.

But if you are right, I shall try that.
Many thanks.

Mark, you have found a wee treasure trove.  I have been using PS6 for a good number of years and due to cost and that it did what I needed I never upgraded.  Now on Premiere Pro CS6 and downloaded PS CS2.  There are no restriction on this software, all that is required is to register the product.  One happy bunny here.  Might go the full hog and download the Creative Suite bundle.

Installed CS2, and it will edit HDV from my Canon HV20. That`s a nice bonus!
Thank for the link.

You're very welcome!

I wonder if this is Adobe secretly trying out a new business model (which I notice that other software houses have been doing) by giving away your old software versions for free, thereby luring you into paying for the latest and greatest to get the most recent features?

Or maybe they're carefully monitoring the IP addresses of everyone who has downloaded CS2 in the past couple of weeks and comparing them to known licence holders - the only people who are legally allowed to download it - before writing the stern letter....wink

My CS2 registered ok. As they wrecked my Pro.1.5, perhaps this is compensation. That`s the way I look at it!
