Access speed?

Is it just me or has the good DVdoctor's lists got akin to stirring porriage with a stick of cooked spaghetti! I know that my ISDN connection has suffered greatly in the hands of BT Anytime, but the CV pages in particular seem to be moribund to extremis.
Now all this could be explained by the throngs of would-be Hollywood wannerbees fighting to get 'the knowledge' but in practice the CV forums seem to be rather, well . . . listless (sorry!) and many an interesting strand is dying a premature death.
This seems to be a rather universal feature of the Lists I frequent with DV-List off the air and many others in virtual abandonment. Maybe it's time I got out more!

Speed seems ok to me, except the long threads in Chatter. Those are slow because of all the GIFs that folks add for fun.

access thru demon at the weekend was diplorable , and other sites were ok.

there is a major network outage in the US at the moment , routing tables screwed up i think , which has affected work since friday morning.

as per 'VBC Net US Connection. This is appearing as 'down' on the Netsight systems'

Slow with my ISDN as well in comparison to other sites, occasionally completely failing to load pages this weekend.

I've just been reading that many ISPs cache popular pages for supposed speed, but as in my case with BT Openworld, perhaps this in fact slows them up. Does anybody know how you can opt to not use the cached pages?

You can first of all disable your local cache: in Netscape from -Edit-Preferences, in "Preferences" Click on the plus sign next to "Advanced", select "Cache", in this window Select "Clear Disk Cache", after the cache has cleared set the "Disk Cache" to 0, Next for the bullets under "Document in cache is compared to document on network:", select "Never". By doing these thing's you should be able to increase the Netscape speed.

With IE you cannot disable local caching.
But you can Remove temporary Internet Files.
Go to Tools -> Internet Options Press the Delete temporry Internet Files. You can set you local cache size to 1 MB (not 0 MB) and you can also specify that you will NEVER look into your local cache.

But of course your question refers to ISP caching, BT and others use Proxy servers. They are useful for ISP's from both a security, management & financial point of view, and useful for subscribers in the potential for increased download speeds (when they have a slow access). You can disable the ISP proxy in IE by going to (Menu)Tools -> Internet Options -> (TAB)connections and uncheck the Use Proxy Server checkbox. In Netscape go to (Menu) -> Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Proxy Servers and disable the proxy server.

However it is possible that the proxy servers are mandatory, making it impossible for you to connect to the internet if you do not go via the proxy servers of your ISP. Trial and error.

If you must go via a proxy and you want to download the most recent version on the webserver, just click CTRL-R in IE or Netscape and the proxy sends a new request to the webserver and will not deliver you the cashed version. This also bypasses locally cached files.

Hope this helps

This thread reminds me that our host company had said that they were changing the hardware sometime soon in an effort to get greatly increased speed.

I'll pull their chain.

A few days ago on the Mac forum, when trying to post, I got a message to the effect that there was a queue and that I should wait for about a minute.

I waited for a short while then posted the message. Later, it could be seen that I had in fact posted the message twice.....?

A forum colleague remarked that I had a dual processor.......!
