Formatting Smartmedia Cards

Dear All,

I have some Smartmedia cards that have been formatted by my Casablanca Kron video machine for its own use. Would like to reformat them for PC use but my PC will not recognise the cards.

Is there a simple (free) utility program or other trick (hopefully not buying a compatible digicam?!) that can format these cards for me?

I have the same issue, I used one of my 64Mb SM in an MP3-player and now the Fuji2400Z won't see it, nor will the PC when it's connected.

I've done some searching around, apparently there is a 'hard' and a 'soft' formatting for SM, the card needs to be 'hard' formatted to return it to factory.

I've heard that the ZIO USB SM reader comes with a utility to do this, and you get one free with the Canon S800 which Santa is getting me for Christmas.

I've just ordered the S800, I'll let you know if it still comes with the ZIO and if it can re-format the SM.

Thanks Adam,

I am still here! Have not had a chance to check out the Zio in town here. Would save several hundred HK dollars if I could reformat these cards.

Look forward to hearing you succeed.

Richard, I just got the S800 and they don't seem to ship with the ZIO anymore

You can check out the SM formats discussions at this address, www.dpreview.com - check out the discussion forums, there's one specifically for storage. That's where I heard about the problems with SM formats.

Thanks again Adam,

Had a browse and will do what somebody else did and ask my friendly dealer to try a format in a camera. If that fails, I had just better buy another card.

Best regards,
Richard

PS. Good digicam website. I will be back there again soon.
