Following my last month's suggestions for the Glossary, (e.g. scrubbing) I am again listing the words I read in the magaine this month that I don't understand. I do hope you might help all other ignorant people like me by adding them!
Compositing
Open GOP structure
AC-3
rotoscoping
demultiplexing

Hope my suggestions help.

Can't help you with most but compositing is laying pictures on top of others to make a new image by keying out some areas of the picture and using transparency settings.

A simple example is placing a newsreader against a green screen and then replacing the greenscreen with a backdrop to make it look like they are in a super studio when really they aren't.

A more complex example is the likes of the way the city scenes were made in Gladiator. They used several layers in each scene and it got incredibly complex, especially when they also had scene movement.

I think that is all correct, but I'm sure someone will put me right if not.

I've found that a lot of the things we do have technical names that we are not aware of and in a lot of cases we don't need to be aware of.

As for the words on the list, I hadn't even heard of demutiplexing, but from what I can gather it is something premiere automatically does for us.

Some people are also quite snobby with names. I can recall a thread on this board where one particular guy was belittling someone else for not knowing what a 'J Cut was. I didn't know what it was so I looked it up and found out it was something I did in every project I do.

I wouldn't worry too much about all these names, I just concentrate on achieving the best results i can in both shooting and editing.
