I've been trying to get my S20 going in XP. The software that came with it won't load. So I emaiuled HP and they pointed me to a download of an updated software pack that runs in everything from Win95 to XP, via 98, NT and 2000. I've just downloaded it. The only problem is how to get the 70MB file home.

Dear Alan,

If you send me the link to the download file, will download it on my own PC and "burn" and send you the file download on Disc.

Any help?

Kindest regards

Stuart.

you beat me to it stuart ......

for files smaller than 64meg i would suggest getting a usb-pendrive.

Just been given a present of a 32mb version .... very fast convenient way of moving files between winme , win2k and winxp , where no driver updates are required .... it hot swops wonderfully.

now stores my complete 20mb websiite and still room to move mp3's around.

yes , i'm sure that everyone will run out to get the !GB version not !!!
we looked at it yesterday and cried.
it would be cheaper to get an ibm 1gb microdrive and a usb to cardreader converter.

my drive came from denmark and has a orange kangaroo as the only trademark on it.

( we had some danes over looking at our networking/video conferencing systems , they are about to do something similar , and i was showing them the advantages/disadvantages that the system creates, relying on cat5 to carry isdn 6 signals to a isdn/networking bridge , is scarey when people alter routing without telling you , and don't anyone believe that videoconferencing over ip is as stable as over true isdn lines.)

Thanks for the offers, guys, but my bleat was tongue-in-cheek. I'm burning it onto a CD today, using someone else's PC on our network. I suppose I was really commenting on the way that software bloats these days.

HP software is good, very good in my experience (and the scanner is brilliant), but I can't see how it needs to be 70M. What they seem to do is to keep the core constant, and to graft on new parts, rather than disturb the core. So, when the scanner was first launched in Win95, the software would be a sensible size. Since then, it's grown to 98, 98SE, 98ME, NT4, 2000, and now XP. I suspect they just throw more layers onto it each time.

To be fair, the nice chap from HP did tell me that it's a rather big download, and pointed me to a url where I could buy the CD, but I'm basically a mean git who'll do it the hard way if it's cheaper, and use that as an excuse to grumble to my chums

So I took the CD home and installed it, and it all works. It seems that the single biggest part of the software is a "tour" of the system, lots of bitmaps, effects, voice soundtrack. That's why it's so huge. It would have been nice to get it all in two packages, the software and the tour, then I could have decided not to bother with the tour, because it's identical to the one that came with the original software that ran in Win98.

Ho hum.

just wait till you 'update' matrox 2x00 software ..... 300 meg is the normal download requirement.

you may well find that the smaller version was available on HP's site ...... it just takes ages to find anything on that site.
http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/swindex.pl?p=hpphotosma10698&l=en&c=MicrosoftWindowsXP has a 368 k file that claims to be an upgrade file for xp as per http://www.hp.com/cposupport/pc_photography/software/ps803mu.exe.html

Sorry, bit late into this thread. I find using standard CF cards works really well via a card reader or PC-card adapter. I often use one as a "sneakernet" for moving files between PCs and Macs.

Not as straightforward as a pendrive of course (there are drivers to install for the reader) but the chances are you already have all the equipment you need.

Hope this helps.

I got it all in and it works like a dream. But I've still got a sizeable list of hardware for which I haven't tracked down drivers yet.
