What I've always wanted to know but was afraid to ask is what those arcane and mysterious-sounding apps. and services which run in the background or on start-up when you call up MSCONFIG are. Without knowing what they are or what they do, it's impossible to make an informed decision on which ones to terminate as part of the optimisation process for video editing. Would love to see an explanation in CV. Tony.

If you install enditall2 http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/enditall/ , it gives a good description of most of the processes running , which will then allow you to make the right decisions in msconfig

I use EIA2 when editing video. And I find it useful for coping with flaky software. Yesterday I was scanning some 35mm negs and the scanner crashed twice, the n ormal route would have been to reboot, but with EIA2 I could identify the crashed driver and kill it, then get going again. I know that there are other ways of doing things like this, but EIA2 is much better at reporting what the process are, and has usefuil extra buttons to disble screen savers and power savers while it's active.

I wouldn't be without it. And it's free. And works in XP.

Thanks, Gary & Alan. I'll have a look at 'enditall' presently but, meantime Alan, could you please point me in the direction of EIA2 -entered it in Google, but gave up after the first 7 irrelevant pages. Cheers! Tony.

Sorry, that's shorthand, EIA2 = EndItAll2.
